My First English Experience: "Why not?" and the Misunderstanding

When I first started learning English, I had an unforgettable experience with a U.S. soldier stationed at Kunsan Air Base. Although my English skills were still basic, I was determined to practice as much as I could. One day, while riding the bus, I decided to try speaking with a U.S. soldier. I nervously asked, “Can I talk with you?” expecting to have a conversation. To my surprise, the soldier simply responded with, “Why not?”

At that moment, I misinterpreted his answer. Because of the word “Not”, I thought he was saying “No”, rejecting my request. I immediately froze and became self-conscious. I assumed that he was saying it wasn’t possible or not allowed, and I felt like I had been rejected. As a result, I couldn’t say another word for the rest of the ride.

Later on, I realized that “Why not?” doesn’t mean rejection. In fact, it is a common way of saying, “Why wouldn’t you?” or “Of course, go ahead!”, meaning the person is agreeing or giving permission. In this case, the soldier was actually being polite and encouraging me to speak, but I didn’t understand the nuance of the phrase back then.

At that time, my English ability was limited, so I interpreted his words as a denial. It became a moment that made me feel even more self-conscious about speaking. I was afraid of making mistakes and felt embarrassed. However, as time passed, I learned the true meaning of “Why not?”, and I realized it was a positive, encouraging response.

This experience taught me an important lesson: language isn’t just about grammar or vocabulary; it’s about understanding the context and the intention behind the words. Over time, I learned that it’s crucial to overcome the fear of making mistakes and to keep speaking, because that’s the key to becoming more fluent in any language.
